How to reduce a video's file size for WhatsApp or email
Updated October 9, 2026
“File too large”: you often see this when trying to send a video over WhatsApp, by email or to upload it to a website. Videos shot on recent phones are very heavy — sometimes hundreds of megabytes for a few minutes. Fortunately, you can shrink them a lot.
Why is a video so large?
A video's size mainly depends on three things:
- Resolution: a 4K video contains four times as many pixels as a 1080p one.
- Bitrate (data per second): the higher it is, the more detailed — and heavier — the image.
- Length: twice as long means roughly twice as heavy.
Limits to know
Messaging apps and email often cap attachment sizes. For email, many services stop at around 20 to 25 MB. On WhatsApp, a video sent normally is usually compressed automatically and size-limited, while sending it as a “document” keeps the original quality but is also capped. These limits change over time: when in doubt, aim for a file under 16 MB to be safe.
Method 1: cut what you don't need
It's the most effective solution and the one people forget most. Remove the useless start and end: a 30-second video instead of 2 minutes weighs about four times less, with no quality loss on the part you keep.
Method 2: lower the resolution
For a phone, 720p is more than enough: the image stays sharp on a small screen and the file is much lighter than 1080p or 4K. For WhatsApp or email, 480p may even do.
Method 3: use a compressor
Klipoo's video editor combines these three levers: cut the useful part, choose the quality (1080p, 720p or “light” 480p) and, if needed, a format such as 9:16. Processing happens in your browser: the video is never uploaded to the internet, which is ideal for personal videos.
Note: processing happens in real time, so a one-minute video takes about one minute. Keep the page open meanwhile.
Method 4: share a link instead of the file
For a long or very high-quality video, upload it to a cloud storage service and just send the link. The recipient gets the original quality, with no size problem.
Which quality should you pick?
- To keep a nice memory: 1080p, without heavy compression.
- For social media: 1080p or 720p, in the right format (9:16 for TikTok and Reels).
- For WhatsApp or email: 720p or 480p, cutting everything that isn't essential.
Always keep your original file: a compressed video can't recover lost quality.
